What 읽 means
It is the stem of Korean 읽다, “to read.”
The dictionary form is 읽다. Bare 읽 is its stem; Korean endings attach there to add grammar such as tense and politeness.
Middle Korean 닑다, an earlier form of this verb, appears in a text from 1447. Hangul was created in 1443 and made public in 1446 to help people write Korean without relying on Chinese characters. The block 읽 joins ㅇ, ㅣ, and final ㄺ. 읽다 sounds 익따; before 어, 읽어 sounds 일거 as ㄺ splits across syllables.
