What 잇 means
Usually, it is a word stem, not a standalone symbol. 잇다 means to connect, continue, or follow, and 잇 starts longer words such as 잇따르다 and 잇닿다. Read a lone 잇 through the words around it: it sounds like “it” and takes forms like 이어 and 잇는 before endings.
The verb’s earliest located form is Middle Korean 닛다 in the song-chronicle Yongbi eocheonga in 1447. Hangul itself was created in 1443 and explained in 1446 to write Korean phonetically, replacing reliance on Chinese characters. A separate Middle Korean 잇다 meant “be, exist, have,” so the surrounding word decides the sense.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
