짇

hangul syllable jid

Hangul syllable Jid

7624/11172

By itself, 짇 has no fixed Korean word meaning; it is a Hangul syllable, roughly pronounced “jit” with a final t. In Korean pronunciation guides, written 짓 can appear as [짇] to show its sound, but ordinary spelling stays 짓. The final ㄷ is this block’s 받침—the consonant that closes it.

What 짇 means

Alone, 짇 is a syllable, not a complete Korean word.

A message containing only 짇 leaves the intended word or sound unclear. Korean pronunciation guides use square brackets for sounds: [짇] can show how written 짓 is pronounced.

Hangul was devised under King Sejong in 1443; its guide, 훈민정음, followed in 1446. A block combines an initial consonant, a vowel and sometimes a final consonant. The lookalike 짓 has a separate history: as the possessive form of 집 (“house,” meaning “of the house”), it appears in 1447 and 1459 texts; older 짒 appears in 1481. 짓아비 (“house-father,” meaning “husband”) later developed into 지아비, a humble term for one's own husband before elders. That history belongs to 짓, not 짇. Text can store a block precomposed or as matching jamo; fonts change only its drawing.

Why does 짇 show up for the sound of 짓?

Because Korean spelling and pronunciation do not always match.

Written 짓 remains in 짓밟다, though Korean pronunciation guides show its first syllable as [짇]. Before ㅁ in 짓무르다, it sounds like [진]; the following consonant changes the sound, not the spelling. Use [짇] to record pronunciation and 짓 in ordinary writing.

Neutral in Korean text; alone, it reads as a fragment, pronunciation note, or typo.

Use 짓 in ordinary spelling; [짇] marks its sound.

Questions people ask

3

Is 짇 the correct spelling of 짓?

No. 짓 is the ordinary spelling; [짇] marks its pronunciation in a guide.

Can a font change what 짇 means?

No. Fonts can change component shapes and spacing, but the character remains the same syllable.

Can a line break split 짇?

Normally no. A precomposed Hangul syllable block is one Unicode character, so line breaking keeps that character intact.
