What 직 means
The surrounding Korean word decides which root 직 represents.
The search spellings jik and jig can both lead to this syllable, but neither is its translation. In 취직, 직 represents 職, a Chinese character tied to employment and duties; in 직접 and 직선적, it represents 直, tied to directness and straightness. The Chinese character 直 appears in Confucian texts from before the Qin dynasty and gained prominence in Song-era thought.
Where did the Hangul syllable 직 come from?
It belongs to Hangul, the alphabet created to write Korean.
Hangul was created in 1443, and a book explaining its design was published in 1446. Before Hangul, Korean writers adapted Chinese characters through systems called Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal, which could make writing Korean difficult for many. Those dates describe the alphabet, not the first written use of the syllable 직.
How do I type 직?
On the standard Korean 2-set keyboard, press W, then L, then R. They enter ㅈ, ㅣ, and ㄱ; the Korean input method assembles these separate Hangul letters, or jamo, as 직. With an English keyboard layout active, the same keys produce Latin letters.
Under Unicode’s Hangul model, 직 can be represented as one precomposed syllable block or as a sequence of separate jamo. Depending on font and software, the sequence may appear as a joined syllable or as separate components; its meaning stays the same.
