What 째 means
It marks sequence, rank, or duration.
The difference between 째 and 번째 is 번: 번째 combines 번 째 for an item's place in a sequence. -째 can also follow a duration; 제- is another way to mark rank.
Before Hangul, Korean speakers relied on Chinese characters to write Korean. King Sejong devised Hangul in 1443; its 1446 guide, Hunminjeongeum, explained the new letters. The suffix appears as 자히 in Middle Korean, an earlier stage of Korean, in 1447.

Questions people ask
1Why does 째 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
