hangul syllable jjeb

Hangul syllable jjeb

7802/11172

쩹 has no fixed meaning by itself; it is one Korean Hangul syllable, so its meaning depends on the Korean word or phrase around it. Its input parts are ㅉ, ㅔ, and ㅂ, which a Korean IME combines into one block. Unicode can also represent the same syllable as three Korean letter forms that join when displayed.

What 쩹 means

By itself, 쩹 has no fixed word meaning. It is a Korean syllable, so any lexical sense comes from the Korean word or phrase around it. If someone sends only this block, ask for context rather than assuming it carries a reaction.

Its input letter forms are ㅉ ㅔ ㅂ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant. These individual Korean letters are called jamo. The Unicode canonical decomposition of 쩹 is 쩹; these conjoining jamo are stored separately and shaped together. A Korean IME joins the input forms into the precomposed block.

Where did Hangul blocks come from?

Hangul began as a Korean writing system. The first record cited by the National Hangeul Museum dates to lunar December 1443; the explanatory book Hunminjeongeum followed in 1446.

Korean was commonly written with Chinese characters, which did not map neatly onto Korean speech. The Joseon court devised Hangul as a system that was easier to learn and use. Its letters combine into blocks for spoken syllables; over time, Hangul became the everyday way to write Korean.

How do I type 쩹?

Use a Korean IME and enter the three letter forms in order. Switch to Korean input and enter ㅉ, ㅔ, ㅂ. The IME joins them into one precomposed block. On a standard Dubeolsik keyboard, press ShiftW for ㅉ, P for ㅔ, and Q for ㅂ.

Unicode can represent the syllable as the precomposed character 쩹 or as the conjoining-jamo sequence 쩹. A Korean-aware app shapes the sequence as a syllable block; without Hangul shaping, it can appear as separate letters. If software treats the two forms differently, normalize the text before comparing them.

1

Why does 쩹 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
