What 쪼 means
It needs context for a settled reading. If someone sends only 쪼, treat it as an unfinished fragment. The whole verb 쪼개다 means “split” or “divide”; its slang sense “grin” belongs to that verb. The Latin spelling is jjo.
How is 쪼 built in Hangul?
It combines initial ᄍ and vowel ᅩ. Hangul blocks join consonant and vowel jamo (building letters). NFD separates them; NFC joins them back as 쪼.
Before Hangul, Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. King Sejong’s court devised Hangul in 1443 to make Korean easier to write; the 1446 guide Hunminjeongeum explained its design. Once sidelined as vernacular, Hangul became the standard public script for Korean in the 20th century. A unified spelling draft appeared in 1933 and was revised in 1988.

1Why does 쪼 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
