hangul syllable jjoek

Hangul syllable Jjoek

쬨 is a single Hangul syllable block; on its own, it does not tell you which Korean word is meant. Hangul was developed in 1443, and the 1446 guide Hunminjeongeum explained its purpose and how to assemble its letters so Korean could be written without relying on Chinese characters.

What 쬨 means

Read it within a Korean word; the surrounding text gives its meaning.

Hangul was developed in 1443. The 1446 guide Hunminjeongeum explained the alphabet's purpose and how its letters form syllable blocks: the system made it possible to write Korean without relying on Chinese characters. Korean writing has also used Hangul alongside Hanja, Chinese characters used in Korean. South Korea generally calls the alphabet Hangul; North Korea calls it Chosŏn'gŭl. Hanja is a separate writing tradition, not the source of this block.

How do I type 쬨 on a Korean keyboard?

On the Korean two-set keyboard, press ShiftW, H, O, then Z. The keys enter ㅉ ㅗ ㅐ ㅋ; the IME combines ㅗ and ㅐ into ㅚ, then puts ㅋ in the final-consonant position.

Fonts can change where the parts sit, their shape, and their size. If 쬨 appears as a box, that font lacks a glyph for it; the text is still the same character. The precomposed block and its decomposed jamo (Hangul letters) are related forms, but a string of separate compatibility jamo does not automatically combine into the block.

Neutral as Korean text; opaque alone to someone who does not read Korean.

A one-block message lacks context; ask which word or sentence was meant.

Ask for the surrounding Korean word or sentence; the block alone does not identify a definite reading.

Don't confuse it with

1

ㅉㅚㅋ This string shows the Hangul consonant, vowel, and final consonant separately; an already formed string of these letters does not automatically recombine into the single syllable block.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 쬨 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
