Hangul syllable 쬙

7962/11172

쬙 is one syllable block in Hangul, the Korean alphabet; what a sender means depends on the Korean word or sentence around it. A Korean keyboard builds the block from jamo, Hangul’s component letters. Unicode can also store the same syllable as separate jamo, even when it displays as one block.

What 쬙 means

It is one Korean syllable block; the surrounding word supplies its reading.

The letters in a Hangul syllable are called jamo. 쬙 combines three modern jamo: initial ᄍ, vowel ᅬ, and final consonant cluster ᆰ. The Korean word or sentence around it tells you how to interpret the syllable.

Why does 쬙 look like a square?

Hangul groups its letters into syllable blocks.

쬙 has a precomposed form, and its canonical jamo decomposition is 쬙. Text normalization can store it as one syllable character or as that jamo sequence. A Hangul-aware renderer can shape the sequence into the same block, so the stored characters may differ while the text looks alike.

The first surviving records of Hangul’s creation date to 1443. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a text explaining the script’s design and purpose, describes a more accessible way to write Korean than relying on Chinese characters. Hangul is alphabetic, though its letters are arranged in square syllable blocks. The Phags-pa script has been proposed as an influence, but it is not a settled ancestor. Korean writing also used Hanja (Chinese characters); South Korean text can still mix Hanja and Hangul.

Neutral text. The Korean word or sentence around 쬙 determines how the writer means it.

A lone 쬙 does not reveal the writer’s intent; ask for its Korean context.

Questions people ask

1

Why did 쬙 turn into separate jamo?

Text normalization or input handling can expose 쬙, the canonical jamo decomposition of the same syllable. A Hangul-aware renderer can still combine that sequence into one visible block.
