What 죈 means
It modifies a following noun. 죄다 means “to tighten”; 죈 is its past form used before a noun, while 죈다 ends a plain statement.
Hangul was designed for Korean speech; its first record dates to 1443, and the 1446 guide Hunminjeongeum explains it. 죈 joins ㅈ, ㅚ, and ㄴ; ㅚ combines ㅗ ㅣ. In the 15th century, ㅚ sounded like “oy”; after the late 19th century, it shifted through a rounded “e” toward a sound beginning with a brief “u” glide into “e.” Around 1600, the diary Gyechuk ilgi records the older form 죄히다; 죄다 is linked to 조이다 (“to tighten”). These letters may display separately.
