좆 means “dick” or “penis” in very vulgar Korean. Read alone, it is deliberate sexual profanity, not a neutral anatomical term.

The earliest attestation I found is the sixteenth-century form 졷 in Magyeong chojip eonhae. That record shows an evolving Korean word, not a one-off invention by a named person.

As of 2026, I found no defensible evidence that the standalone word was made for a ritual, political, or institutional purpose. One dictionary etymology cautiously proposes a cognate with Manchu ᠴᠣᠴᠣ, but presents that relationship as probable rather than settled.

Read it as deliberate vulgarity unless context clearly softens it.

Korean profanity can function as attack, emotional release, or in-group solidarity, so who sent it matters. A close friend blowing off steam is different from a stranger, client, teacher, or workplace contact, where most readers hear the sexual insult first.

The base also travels into idioms: 좆같다 evaluates a situation as awful, while 좆되다 means being screwed or in trouble. Those readings are not literal anatomy, but they keep the word's rough register.

Why does it sometimes mean “fucking”?

It becomes a vulgar intensifier in later compounds.

좆나 is documented as a contraction of 좆 나게 and as “fucking” or “as fuck”; that intensifier usage is recorded since the 1980s. 존나 is an alternative spelling that obscures the sexual source, so it can feel less explicit without becoming polite.

The trail points to lexical broadening: an anatomical vulgar noun, then compounds for evaluation, trouble, and emphasis. It does not support treating 좆 as a pictorial symbol with a separate hidden meaning.
