What 좕 means
Hangul groups jamo, its consonant and vowel letters, into syllable blocks. Here, ㅈ is the initial, ㅘ the vowel, and ㄺ the final cluster of ㄹ and ㄱ.
King Sejong created Hangul in 1443 because Korean differed from Chinese, and many people could not express themselves in writing with Chinese characters. The script was first called “Hunminjeongeum”; a 1446 book with that name explained its design. Records point to “Hangeul” in the early 1910s; the name spread after the holiday was renamed Hangeul Day in 1928. One debated theory links some forms to Mongolian Phags-pa; the traditional account says consonants imitate speech organs and vowels follow the ideas of sky, earth, and human.

1Why does 좕 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
