hangul syllable jyo

Hangul Syllable Jyo

죠 often adds “right?” or “isn’t it?” to a Korean sentence. Shortened from 지요, it can also soften a statement or suggest doing something together. Its nudge toward shared understanding makes it less neutral than a plain question.

What 죠 means

It is a conversational short form of 지요. 죠 can ask for confirmation, make a friendly question, soften a statement, or suggest a shared action. It treats the point as familiar or likely to be accepted.

Hangul syllable blocks group letters to write Korean sounds. The Korean alphabet was designed in 1443, and its design was documented in 1446. 죠 combines the consonant letter ㅈ and vowel letter ㅛ. The historical form 됴 is related; by the 19th century, a sound change made 죠 and 조 alike in some contexts. Text can store the letters separately or as one block; Unicode normalization can convert between those forms, while fonts may arrange the letters differently.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 죠 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
