What 캝 means
Enter ㅋ, ㅐ, ㄹ, then ㅌ in a Korean IME.
A Korean IME is a keyboard's Korean text input: it combines those letter inputs into 캝. If the pieces stay separate, the input method did not compose this syllable. Fonts may draw the finished block differently; Unicode does not require one exact outline.
What does 캝 mean by itself?
Read it as one syllable within the surrounding word.
Hangul groups consonant and vowel elements into syllable blocks, and a block can be part of a longer word. On its own in chat, 캝 does not give enough context to identify what the sender intended.
Where do Hangul syllable blocks come from?
Hangul, the Korean writing system, was designed to group sounds into syllable blocks.
It was devised for speech in Joseon, a Korean kingdom of the period. The Sejong Sillok, chronicles of King Sejong, records Hunminjeongeum, the new writing system, in 1443; an explanatory book about it was published in 1446. A block arranges a starting consonant, a vowel and, when present, ending consonants.
The name Hangeul is thought to appear in records in the early 1910s and became widely used after 1928. Those dates trace the script's name, not the origin of this individual syllable.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
Codes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
