hangul syllable kij

Hangul syllable Kij

9403/11172

킺 is a Hangul syllable block; the Korean word it appears in gives it meaning. It joins the jamo (letters) ㅋ, ㅣ, and final ㅈ: at a word end, ㅈ is a clipped t, while before a vowel it links into the next syllable with a soft j-like sound. Hangul arranges these letters into a compact written block.

What 킺 means

It names one syllable; the Korean word around it gives it meaning.

The jamo, or component letters, ㅋ ㅣ ㅈ form this block, with ㅈ as its bottom consonant.

A text system can store it as one precomposed block or as conjoining jamo (letters that combine); normalization can join the sequence back into the block.

Where did this block come from?

It follows Hangul’s system for building syllable blocks. Hangul’s creation and formal explanation span 1443–1446. Its letters were arranged in blocks to make learning and writing easier than relying on Chinese characters.

A 2019 study compared this block design with the Mongolian Phags-pa script. It compares writing systems; it does not show that this individual syllable was borrowed.

Why is 킺 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
