What 콧 means

It marks the linking ㅅ called 사이시옷. The block combines ㅋ, ㅗ, and final ㅅ. In 콧물, that ㅅ sounds like n before ㅁ, the Korean m letter; the pronunciation is written 콘물. 콧대 can also mean “pride.”

Hangul letters were devised in 1443; Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the system, was published in 1446. Earlier, Korean writing used Chinese characters in methods such as Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol to record Korean words and grammar. 콧 is one block in Hangul’s letter-based system.

Inside a compound, 콧 is ordinary spelling; alone, it feels unfinished.

Why does 콧 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
