Text symbol

What 콱 means

It gives a verb a sudden, physical edge.

With 박다 (“hit”), 콱 marks collision; with 막히다 (“be blocked”), it suggests breath or feeling caught. A 1908 print use appears in Choe Nam-seon’s poem 해에게서 소년에게 (“From the Sea to the Boy”), where 콱 ends repeated sounds and gives the sea’s force a crash. Later verbs use it for impact and blockage.

Colloquial, abrupt, and physical.

Alone, it can sound aggressive or unexplained; the verb usually supplies the scene.

Why does 콱 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
