hangul syllable kwan

Hangul Syllable Kwan

9077/11172

콴 is the Hangul syllable for the sound “kwan,” not a standalone word or emoji. In Korean it shows up inside a name or transliteration such as 미셸 콴. Type it with a Korean IME as ㅋ ㅗ ㅏ ㄴ and the letters merge into one block.

What 콴 means

It is a sound block, not a fixed standalone translation. Say it as kwan: the surrounding Korean word or name supplies the meaning. The clearest documented use is transcription, including the Korean spelling of Michelle Kwan as 미셸 콴 and artist labels such as Kwan(콴). It carries no built-in mood or reaction.

As of September 2026, I found no defensible separate first attestation for this exact block. The script itself has documented dates in 1443 and 1446: Hangul was designed in 1443, promulgated in 1446, and explained in Hunminjeongeum as initial, medial, and final letters assembled into syllable blocks. 콴 is built from ㅋ plus ㅘ plus ㄴ; 관 is a separate block with plain ㄱ, not its ancestor.

How do you type 콴?

Use a Korean IME and enter ㅋ, ㅗ, ㅏ, then ㄴ. On 2-beolsik QWERTY, that is Z H K S; the IME merges ㅗㅏ into ㅘ and assembles one block. Copy it from the palette above when matching text matters.

Unicode separates the precomposed block from loose jamo. Pasted ㅋㅘㄴ can remain three characters, so a search box may not match 콴 even though they sound alike; use the exact 콴 for names and quotes.

Tone-neutral text: it marks the syllable kwan inside a word, name, or transliteration.

Do not translate 콴 alone; read the surrounding word or name first.

Why does ㅋㅘㄴ not always match 콴?

Yes, they can differ. ㅋㅘㄴ may stay as separate jamo while 콴 is one precomposed syllable; pasted or normalized text can preserve either form.
