Hangul Syllable Kyeop

9015/11172

With Korean Dubeolsik input active, type z-u-v to enter 켶. The keys form one Hangul syllable block from an initial consonant, vowel, and final consonant; its meaning comes from the Korean word around it.

What 켶 means

Use a Korean Dubeolsik keyboard: z-u-v. With the Korean IME active, those keys enter ㅋ, ㅕ, and ㅍ in order; the IME combines them into 켶.

In English input mode, the same physical keys type Latin letters, so switch to Korean input first.

Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was devised in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 to make Korean easier to write than relying on hanja, Chinese characters used in Korean. Hangul's public role changed over time, but 켶 follows the ordinary syllable pattern: initial consonant, vowel, final consonant. Its final ㅍ follows ordinary Korean word-ending pronunciation rules.

Why does ㅋㅕㅍ stay separate?

They are three separate compatibility letters, not one syllable. Unicode's decomposition of 켶 uses conjoining jamo—the Hangul forms designed to join into syllable blocks—ᄏ, ᅧ, and ᇁ. The two sequences look related but contain different stored characters.

In the older Korean KS X 1001 encoding, a placeholder called Hangul Filler before ㅋㅕㅍ represented 켶; Unicode documented that legacy mapping in 2017. The three compatibility jamo by themselves remain separate characters in ordinary Unicode text.

Neutral Korean text: it marks a syllable, while the word around it supplies the meaning.

If it arrives alone, ask for the surrounding Korean word before reading a mood into it.

Why is 켶 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
