Hangul Syllable Kyis

9372/11172

킛 is a Hangul block whose Unicode label, “kyis,” names its parts rather than translating a Korean word. Hangul was created in 1443 and explained in 1446 to make Korean reading and writing easier. Unicode also treats its separate jamo sequence as equivalent to the single block.

What 킛 means

It is a syllable block built from Hangul letters. Jamo are Hangul’s consonant and vowel letters. A block places an initial consonant, a vowel, and sometimes a final consonant together; 킛 uses ㅋ, ㅢ, and ㅅ in those roles. Unicode’s generated label “kyis” describes these components rather than translating a Korean word. The same syllable can also be stored as a canonically equivalent sequence of three separate jamo.

Why does 킛 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
