What 마 means
It can be a syllable or the Korean word for yam.
As a Korean word, 마 names a yam. As a syllable inside another word, it has no fixed translation by itself; read the whole word. In 꼼짝 마, it is the shortened imperative form of 말다 (“to stop or not do something”), so the phrase means “don’t move.”
King Sejong created Hangul in 1443 as a writing system for Korean speech, which people had previously written with Chinese characters. The 1446 explanatory book 훈민정음 해례본 describes the system, designed to be easy to learn. Its consonant and vowel letters, called jamo, are grouped into square syllable blocks; 마 is one block.
What does 마 mean when someone sends it alone?
A lone 마 needs context; one reading is regional. A 2012 review of Gyeongsang speech describes standalone 마 as a conversational marker for emphasis, shifts of topic or action, and requests. It also says the relative seniority of speaker and listener affects how natural the marker sounds. This is a regional speech convention, not a universal chat meaning.
If a message contains only 마 and the Korean context does not clarify it, ask what phrase the sender intended before reading it as an instruction.
The yam noun is neutral; 꼼짝 마 is direct; standalone Gyeongsang 마 can sound emphatic or directive, with naturalness shaped by relative seniority.
A lone 마 does not automatically mean “yam” or “stop.”

1Why does 마 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
