What 맾 means
Its reading and translation come from the Korean word around it.
The block combines ᄆ (an initial consonant), ᅢ (a vowel), and ᇁ (a final consonant). These component letters are called jamo.
What is 맾’s history?
It is a block built from Hangul letters, not a separately invented sign.
Hangul was developed in 1443 and promulgated in 1446. Hunminjeongeum, the guide introducing the script, presented a learnable way to represent Korean speech more directly than writing in Chinese characters alone.
Hangul letters are alphabetic, but the square syllable layout fit a visual format familiar from Chinese-character writing of that period. Modern Korean spelling also reflects word structure, so written letters do not always line up one-to-one with sounds in speech.
How do I type 맾?
On a Korean 2-beolsik keyboard, type a-o-v.
The keys enter ㅁ, ㅐ, and ㅍ; a Korean input method combines them as 맾. On another layout, enter those same three jamo in its Korean IME.
Neutral writing unit; its meaning comes from the Korean word that contains it.
A lone 맾 is not enough to translate; ask for the word around it.

Don't confuse it with
2맾 맾 vs 맾: this is the same consonant-vowel-final sequence in conjoining-jamo form; fonts and apps may shape it differently.
Questions people ask
1Why does 맾 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
