hangul syllable mej

Hangul Syllable Mej

3691/11172

On its own, 멪 is one Hangul syllable in Korean spelling, not a complete chat reaction. A Korean input method (IME) joins its jamo—the Hangul letter components—into one block as you type. Hangul began as a more accessible way to write Korean and later entered official documents.

What 멪 means

It is one Korean spelling block, not a complete message.

멪 is made from an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant: 멪. These individual Hangul letters are called jamo. Unicode forms the label “Mej” from the parts; it is not a translation or a Korean word. In a Korean word, the surrounding spelling gives the syllable its place and the word its meaning.

Before Hangul, Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean sounds and grammar. King Sejong introduced Hangul in 1443; the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained the new script. It offered a more accessible way to write Korean. During the Joseon period, Hangul appeared in religious and practical books and private letters, though many elites valued Chinese-character writing more. In 1894, an imperial order required Hangul in official documents. 멪 follows Hangul’s regular consonant-vowel-final consonant pattern; it was not designed as a separate sign.

How do I type 멪 on Windows?

Use a Korean input method in Hangul mode.

Windows 11’s Korean input setup instructions, updated in 2024, start by adding Korean in Language settings. Select Microsoft IME, switch to Hangul mode, and type ㅁ, ㅔ, ㅈ; it joins them into 멪 as you type. For one use, copy it from the palette.

A pasted version may instead contain the separate jamo sequence 멪, an equivalent Unicode representation of 멪. Why does Hangul show as separate jamo? Some apps or fonts do not join those letters for display; use 멪 when you need the syllable to stay in one character.

Neutral as Korean writing; alone in a chat, it calls for context because one syllable is not a full message.

Is 멪 an emoji? No. It is Korean text; don't infer a reaction or feeling from this syllable alone.

Why does 멪 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
