Hangul Syllable Meom

By itself, 멈 is a syllable, not a complete Korean word.

Look for the rest of the word. The verb family around 멈추다 covers a sound, cry, rain, machine, vehicle, movement, or ongoing action stopping, and it can also mean making something stop. In 멈춰, the ending makes it a conversational “stop” or “halt.”

How do you type and read the block?

It combines ㅁ, ㅓ, and final ㅁ into one syllable block.

Why is this syllable part of Hangul's story?

Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to write and learn.

The historical record begins with a late-1443 court entry saying that the king made 28 letters; in 1446, Hunminjeongeum was published to explain the new script's purpose and principles. The project addressed a mismatch between Korean speech and Chinese characters, whose adaptations were difficult for broad literacy.

Earlier practices such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal are connected writing traditions, not alternate meanings of 멈. Hangul's social role widened through Buddhist texts, Confucian translations, practical books, and everyday writing before it became Korea's official national writing system in 1894.
