Hangul syllable mob

3770/11172

In Korean game chat, 몹 means a computer-controlled monster or enemy the party fights. It appears in terms for gathering monsters (몹몰이), managing their attention (몹 어그로), and naming a boss monster (보스몹). The gaming term traces through English mob to MUD1’s mobile, a moving game object that was not necessarily a creature.

What 몹 means

A game monster or enemy the players fight, gather, or manage.

In Korean game talk, 몹 is shorthand for a computer-controlled 몬스터 or enemy. It is the target people fight, gather, or avoid; the surrounding word tells you what is happening to it.

The Korean game use borrows English mob. In MUD1, designer Richard Bartle used mobile for objects that moved under their own power, including vehicles or clouds; players shortened it to mob. Korean game usage kept the lineage but usually narrowed the word to enemies. The Hangul block 몹 is built from three jamo: ㅁ at the start, ㅗ as its vowel, and ㅂ at the end.

What does 몹 mean in a message?

In game chat, read it as the enemy under discussion.

Alone in party chat, 몹 points to the enemy being fought. A neighboring word gives it a job: gathering, managing its threat, or identifying a boss. The syllable itself is not an insult or reaction.

Korean illustration and comics terminology also uses 몹 장면 for a crowd scene with background people. In an art note, read it as extras; without a game or art context, ask for the sentence it came from.

How do I type 몹?

On Dubeolsik, type a, h, then q.

Dubeolsik is the standard Korean two-set keyboard layout. Switch to Korean input and press a, h, then q; the input method combines ㅁ, ㅗ, and ㅂ into one block. If the result is ahq, the keyboard is still in English mode.

몹 is a Hangul text syllable drawn by the font. Unicode can represent it as one precomposed syllable or an equivalent sequence of its jamo, so a text-processing tool may expose the parts.

Informal Korean game shorthand: quick wording that assumes shared combat vocabulary.

Outside gaming or art, a bare 몹 can be unclear; add 몬스터 or name the game.
