뫼

hangul syllable moe

Hangul Syllable Moe

뫼 is an old Korean word for “mountain,” but in modern funeral language it can mean a person’s grave. It survives in place names and literary writing after everyday Korean shifted toward 산. If someone sends it alone, treat it as text that needs context, not as an emoji reaction.

What 뫼 means

It means mountain in older Korean and grave in modern funeral speech. The mountain reading belongs to historical or literary language; the grave reading appears in respectful talk about a person's burial place.

A secondary lexical record places a written attestation of 뫼 in 1586's Sohak eonhae. A 2002 place-name study traces the form through an older element in early Korean names: its original job was naming a high place, and the mountain form evolved through sound change.

Why does 뫼 survive in place names?

Place names preserve it after everyday speech shifted to 산. A place-name study reports the older form in written evidence through the mid-18th century; by the 19th century, the Chinese-derived 산 had displaced the mountain word from ordinary speech.

The same study links surviving mountain names with related forms such as 메, 매, and 미. They are historical Korean place-name forms, not interchangeable modern synonyms for 산.

Someone sent me 뫼—what should I read?

Read it as Korean text, not as an emoji reaction. If someone sends only 뫼, ask for the surrounding phrase instead of assigning it a mood or joke.

A poem, place name, or historical quotation points toward the mountain lane; a message about ancestors or burial points toward the grave lane.

As a standalone mountain word, 뫼 sounds literary or old; in funeral language, it is a respectful native word for a grave.

Do not translate every 뫼 as “mountain”: funeral context can make it mean a grave.

Can I use 뫼 for mountain in ordinary Korean?

Yes, but it sounds old or literary; use 산 for a neutral modern sentence.

Are 묏자리 and 묫자리 both correct?

Yes. Both are accepted spellings for a grave site; the compound changes the first element's written form.

Why does 뫼 look different in different apps?

It can. A font draws this text glyph, so its outline may change without changing the character.
