What 낟 means
It names cereal grain. In 낟알, ㄷ carries into the following vowel, sounding roughly “na-dal” (나달); alone, it ends without an audible release. In 낟가리, ㄷ comes before another consonant.
The Middle Korean text Seokbo sangjeol records 낟 in 1447. A 1446 Hunminjeongeum commentary explains Hangul’s blocks: an initial consonant, a vowel, and sometimes a final consonant form one syllable. Earlier systems—Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal—used Chinese characters to write Korean and were a poor fit for its speech.
