hangul syllable naep

Hangul Syllable Naep

1231/11172

냎 is one Korean Hangul syllable; the surrounding word or message tells you its role. A 2017 Korean-language column about English used it to spell “nap” by sound, while 낮잠 gives the Korean word.

What 냎 means

As of 2026, 냎 has no fixed word meaning on its own.

The earliest records for Hangul are dated 1443 and 1446. A royal record from 1443 mentions 28 letters, and a 1446 book explains their design and use. Hangul gave Korean a systematic way to write spoken language; 냎 is a syllable block formed from its letters, not a separately invented sign.

In 2017, a Korean-language column about English printed “nap (냎)” as a pronunciation aid, then translated the example with 낮잠, the Korean word for a daytime nap. That pairing does not make 냎 the Korean word for a nap.

What if someone sends only 냎?

A lone 냎 needs surrounding context to decode.

It may be a fragment of a longer Korean word or a syllable someone is discussing. Check the rest of the message; if there is no clue, ask the sender what they meant.

How do I type 냎?

Enter ㄴ, ㅐ, then ㅍ in a Korean IME.

These are the initial-consonant, vowel, and final-consonant inputs. Unicode normalization NFC keeps 냎 precomposed as one character, while NFD separates it into jamo, the Korean letters that form the block. On Microsoft systems, font shaping may place decomposed jamo differently inside the syllable cell.

Alone, it reads as a syllable being discussed or as a fragment; surrounding text sets the tone.

In the 2017 example, 냎 represents the English sound “nap”; 낮잠 is the Korean translation.

Why does 냎 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
