What 낫 means
낫 names a sickle; 낫다 means “recover” or “be better.”
A Korean sickle cuts crops, grass, and branches. Korean archaeological references place sickles among Iron Age farm implements; the 1429 농사직설, a Korean farming manual, also lists them as farm tools.
Korean sickles had regional forms shaped by terrain and materials. They were used alongside tools such as the hoe (호미), plow (쟁기), and flail (도리깨). As mechanized farming spread from the 1960s, use of traditional hand tools declined.

1Why does 낫 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
