What 닢 means
It is an older Korean spelling of 잎, meaning “leaf.”
The 1447 Korean text Yongbi eocheonga (“Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven”) records 닢. 15th–17th-century sources retain it; 18th–19th-century sources show both forms as word-initial ㄴ (“n”) was lost before ㅣ (“i”).
In 꽃잎 (“flower petal”), n remains audible at the join, though modern spelling uses 잎.
What does 닢 mean in a message?
Context decides: “leaf” in old writing, one coin in a money phrase.
In 동전 한 닢, 닢 counts one coin.
Literary or archaic for “leaf”; established as a one-coin counter.
Use 잎 for an ordinary modern leaf; 닢 looks deliberately old.

1Why does 닢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
