Hangul syllable Nis

1756/11172

닛 is a Hangul syllable with no fixed meaning on its own; read it within a Korean word or use the message for context. A 1590 Korean translation of the Mencius preserves 닛디, an older form of 잇다 (“connect”); a 2025 Jeju vocabulary card records 닛 as a local word for “four.”

Text symbol

What 닛 means

Its role depends on the Korean word or local reading. Hangul, the Korean writing system, was devised in 1443 to represent Korean speech more directly than Chinese characters could.

Unicode can also represent 닛 as three separate jamo—Hangul letters—without changing which syllable it is.

Neutral as a written syllable; a single-message reading needs context.

Jeju’s “four” reading is listed on a 2025 vocabulary card; keep it specific to that local entry.

1

Why does 닛 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
