노

hangul syllable no

Hangul syllable no

노 is a Korean syllable, roughly pronounced noh with a steady o, not a word with one fixed translation. In a full word it takes meaning from its neighbors; online you may meet it in 노잼, 노답, or sentence-final -노. That last use can be regional or carry an online political association, so the ending alone does not identify a sender's views.

What 노 means

By itself, it has no single fixed translation.

The Latin spelling no represents the Korean sound, roughly noh with a steady o; it is not the English word no. Translate the whole word: 노력 means effort, and 노화 means aging. If someone sends only 노, the surrounding conversation may not be enough to tell which word they mean.

Is -노 an Ilbe expression?

Not automatically: -노 can also be a Gyeongsang dialect ending.

A regional speech survey recorded sentence-final -노 in Gyeongsang speech in 2006. In 2026 reporting, online use was also linked to Ilbe, a South Korean online community, and mockery of former president Roh Moo-hyun. Whether every such use is political remains contested; read the sentence and the speaker's usual style.

Placement changes the function. In 노잼 and 노답, the initial 노 echoes the English word no; that is a different construction from adding -노 to the end of a sentence.

Why is 노 written as a block?

Hangul groups letters into sound-based syllable blocks; this one combines ㄴ and ㅗ.

Hangul was designed to make Korean speech easier to write than with Hanja, Chinese characters also used in Korean writing. Its first official record dates to 1443; Hunminjeongeum, an explanation of the new letters, followed in 1446. Hangul became an official national writing system in 1894 and lost that status under Japanese rule in 1910.

Its historical setting includes Hanja and kugyŏl, a system of marks added to Chinese texts to help read them in Korean. A 2026 study discusses the Mongolian Phags-pa script, scripts from India, and Chinese sound analysis as background to Hangul's design; it does not establish that Hangul was copied from any one of them.

Ordinary 노 inside a word is not the same social choice as adding a conspicuous sentence-final -노.

Do not infer politics or birthplace from -노 alone.

Don't confuse it with

ㄴㅗ
Two separate compatibility jamo, not the composed syllable 노. They are different text, not just different fonts.

Should I use -노 with a boss?

Avoid trying it out in a message to a boss. Use a polite Korean sentence ending you already know; -노 can distract from your point or sound mocking.
