hangul syllable nuss

Hangul syllable Nuss

1561/11172

눘 is a single Hangul syllable block, built from an opening consonant, a vowel, and a closing consonant. Its meaning comes from the Korean word around it; alone, it has no reliable message reading. Hangul was designed to make Korean speech easier to write than Chinese-character writing.

What 눘 means

It spells one syllable; its neighbors supply the word. The jamo decomposition of 눘 is ᄂ ᅮ ᆻ: an opening consonant, a vowel, and a closing consonant. Korean keyboards show these as ㄴ ㅜ ㅆ. “Nuss” is Unicode’s structural label, not a word definition.

Hangul’s new letters are first recorded in 1443; Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining them, followed in 1446. The alphabet made Korean speech easier to write than relying on Chinese characters, opening literacy to ordinary people.

Individual Hangul letters are called jamo. Hanja means the Chinese characters used in Korean writing; it is an older, separate system, not a component of this syllable. Hangul spread through Buddhist books, then popular novels in the 17th and 18th centuries, before entering official documents. North Korea calls the script Choseongul; South Korea calls it Hangul.

Why does 눘 change while I type?

A Korean IME joins the letters as you enter them.

A Korean IME (keyboard input for Hangul) assembles the letters in order: ㄴ, ㅜ, then ㅆ. It can show an unfinished block while you are still typing. The separate letter characters and the completed syllable block are different Unicode text.

The active font draws the strokes. The same Hangul character can look different in another font; if a font lacks it, text software may use a fallback glyph.

Technical-looking in isolation; inside Korean text, it functions as a syllable.

A lone send gives the reader no reliable reaction to decode.

Why is 눘 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
