hangul syllable nyu

Hangul syllable Nyu

1653/11172

뉴 is read “nyu” (n plus the y glide in “yes” and oo as in “food”); alone, it has no fixed translation. 뉴스 means “news.” Some South Korean words from Chinese readings write initial 뉴 as 유.

Text symbol

What 뉴 means

It contributes a syllable's sound; the complete word supplies meaning.

뉴 joins ㄴ (n) and ㅠ (a vowel beginning with a y glide). In 뉴스, it contributes the opening syllable.

King Sejong devised Hangul to ease Korean writing. It took shape in 1443; the Hunminjeongeum guide explained it in 1446. Korea adopted Hangul as an official writing system in 1894.

Why is 뉴 written as 유?

In certain South Korean words, the initial-sound rule changes 뉴 to 유.

It applies to Hanja-based words—Korean words read from Chinese characters—and only at a word's start.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 뉴 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
