What 폰 means

Phone compounds mean a device; chess context means pawn.

Phone compounds such as 휴대폰 (mobile phone), 핸드폰, and 스마트폰 (smartphone) use 폰 for a device. In chess, 폰 names the pawn.

Hangul was designed to write Korean. A 1443 record calls it Hunminjeongeum; an explanatory book followed in 1446. Its consonant system drew on traditional Chinese sound classification. Hangul has also been compared with the Phags-pa script, created in 1269, but that comparison does not establish direct descent.

Why does 폰 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
