Does 랭 mean ranking?

In gaming shorthand, 랭 usually points to rank.

Korean game chat uses 랭겜 for ranked play and 대리랭 for having someone else raise an account’s rank. In 랭킹, the same syllable starts the ordinary word for a ranking. Here 랭 is a clipped building block, not a definition by itself.

Why is 랭 written 냉?

South Korean spelling changes by word position.

At the start of a Sino-Korean word, the 冷 “cold” reading is written 냉, as in 냉각; elsewhere in a compound it stays 랭, as in 한랭, 고랭지, and 급랭. Region can also explain the form, because North and South Korean spelling handles initial ㄹ and ㄴ differently.
