What 렟 means
By itself, 렟 has no standalone word meaning. It is a Hangul syllable block made from ㄹ, ㅔ, and ㅊ. The word containing it supplies the lexical meaning.
The Unicode name “Rec” is built from labels for the initial consonant, vowel, and final consonant; it does not tell you how to pronounce the block in a Korean word.
Why was Hangul created?
Hangul gave Korean a writing system designed for its sounds.
Hangul was developed under King Sejong of Joseon, with its design completed in 1443. A guide called Hunminjeongeum was published in 1446 to explain the letters. Before Hangul, people wrote Korean with Chinese characters and methods such as idu and hyangchal, which adapted those characters to represent Korean words and sounds.
In 1894, reforms declared Hangeul Joseon’s official script. Under Japanese colonial rule, Hangeul faced suppression, though teaching and publishing continued; after liberation in 1945, Hangeul education and use expanded again. A 2009 article proposed that Phags-pa, a Mongolian script, influenced some Hangul vowel designs and ㅇ. This is a debated proposal about Hangul’s design, not evidence that 렟 itself descends from Phags-pa.

Neutral as part of Korean spelling; alone, 렟 carries no word-level meaning.
“Rec” in its Unicode name labels its parts; it is not the syllable’s Korean pronunciation.
