What 렄 means
It combines three Korean alphabet letters into one written syllable.
The first, middle, and final positions hold ㄹ, ㅓ, and ㅋ. Korean calls these component letters jamo. Unicode derives “reok” from their component names; the label describes the block's construction, not a Korean dictionary entry.
Why are Hangul letters grouped into blocks?
The block arranges alphabet letters into a readable Korean syllable.
The first surviving notice of Hunminjeongeum, the newly devised Korean writing system, appears in Sejong Shilok, a royal chronicle, in 1443. A book under that title followed in 1446 and explained the consonant and vowel letters and how to arrange them into syllable blocks.
The current Korean spelling system rests on a 1933 draft and was partly revised in 1988. These dates mark efforts to standardize Korean spelling, not the origin of this individual block.
How do I type 렄?
Enter ㄹ, ㅓ, then ㅋ in a Korean IME.
A Korean input method editor (IME) joins those letters as you type. Fonts can change the size, shape, and placement of strokes inside the block, so 렄 may look unfamiliar without becoming a different character.
Technical and language-specific; best read as part of Korean text.

1Why does 렄 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
