Hangul Syllable Ri

리, romanized as ri, is a Korean syllable, not a word with one fixed meaning. It appears in words and names; the surrounding phrase tells you whether it means “reason,” “possibility,” or something else.

What 리 means

Read the phrase, not just the block. In 그럴 리가 없어, “there’s no way,” 리 means reason or possibility and needs preceding words. In addresses, it marks a village; sentence-final -리 sounds literary.

Hangul, Korea’s alphabet, was created in 1443 and explained in 1446 as a system for writing Korean speech.

Why does 리 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
