hangul syllable rweoj

Hangul syllable Rweoj

3355/11172

뤚 is a Korean Hangul syllable; its meaning comes from the word it belongs to. It combines ㄹ, ㅝ, and ㅈ in one block, and by itself reads as a syllable fragment. Its romanized name is “rweoj”; at the end of a Korean syllable, ㅈ closes with an unreleased t-like sound.

What 뤚 means

It reads as a syllable; the Korean word around it supplies meaning.

Hangul syllables are built from letters called jamo, arranged in a compact block. This one has initial ㄹ, vowel ㅝ, and final ㅈ. In a Korean word, that word supplies the meaning; alone, 뤚 is a written syllable fragment. Its romanized reading is rweoj; at a syllable’s end, ㅈ closes like an unreleased “t.”

Hangul was designed to write Korean speech more clearly than Chinese characters could. The first recorded account dates to 1443; the explanatory book Hunminjeongeum (“Correct Sounds for Teaching the People”) appeared in 1446. Its square syllable blocks resemble Chinese characters, but Hangul letters are not directly derived from them. Chinese characters, called Hanja in Korean, continued alongside Hangul in South Korea. A 2020 paper proposes that Siddham, a Buddhist script used for Sanskrit, influenced Hangul vowels; this remains a scholarly proposal. Earlier names included jeongeum, eonmun, banjeol, gukmun, and gukseo; “Hangeul” became common in the early 1910s.

How do I type 뤚?

Enter ㄹ, then ㅝ, then ㅈ with a Korean input method.

Unicode also has the decomposed jamo sequence 뤚. An editor may show its letters separately instead of composing one syllable block, but the sequence corresponds to 뤚.

Why does 뤚 look different in fonts?

The font changes the drawing, not the syllable.

Hangul fonts vary in stroke shape and in how they position the three letters inside the square cell. A different typeface changes the appearance, not the character.

At home in Korean writing or language study; alone, it reads as an isolated syllable.
