Hangul syllable 릥

릥 is one block in Hangul, Korea’s system for writing Korean. It gives you a syllable; the surrounding word or sentence gives it a translation.

What 릥 means

It is a syllable block, built from three jamo. Its jamo (the letters that build Hangul syllables) are ㄹ at the start, ㅢ as the vowel, and ㅇ at the end. Two adjacent Hangul blocks simply spell a longer Korean word; they do not form a special multi-block character.

Hangul’s recognisable writing system was developed in 1443 and explained in the 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a text introducing the new script. It let people write Korean speech with a system designed for Korean sounds; earlier practice relied on Chinese characters and Idu, a way of writing Korean by adapting those characters.

Hangul was restricted under Japanese colonial rule and became Korea’s national script after 1945. South Korean usage calls it Hangul; North Korean usage favors Chosŏn'gŭl (조선글). A 2009 study compared Hangul’s writing system with Phags-pa, an older Mongolian script; that is a comparison of writing systems, not a special meaning carried by 릥.

Someone sent me 릥 — what does it mean?

As of 2026, this block has no established standalone chat reading. If someone sent only 릥, treat it as Korean text missing its surrounding word or sentence; ask for that context before assigning it a reaction or slang meaning.

How do I type 릥?

A Korean IME builds it from the component jamo. Enter ㄹ, ㅡ, ㅣ, and ㅇ in order; the input method combines ㅡ ㅣ as ㅢ and places ㅇ at the end of the block.

In NFC, it is stored as one precomposed block. NFD expresses the same syllable as 릥; a font or app without Hangul shaping support may show those jamo apart.

Technical and language-learning register; it belongs in Korean text or Hangul discussion.

Without the surrounding Korean text, do not treat it as a message or reaction.

1

Why does 릥 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
