hangul syllable ryug

Hangul Syllable Ryug

륙, read ryuk, is a Korean syllable block, not a standalone symbol. Its sense comes from the word around it. In South Korean writing the related form 육 usually starts the word; North Korean spelling and some compounds keep 륙.

What 륙 means

It is a Korean syllable, not a word with one meaning.

Hangul stacks sounds into one block, so 륙 only makes sense inside a Korean word, often the number-six element also seen as 육.

Hangul was made to fit Korean speech. First mentioned in 1443 and explained in 1446, it builds syllables from parts. An 1898 newspaper already prints 륙 in a money amount.

Why is 륙 written instead of 육?

Region and word position decide the spelling.

As of 2026, South Korean standard drops word-initial ㄹ in many Sino-Korean words, writing 육 where North Korean spelling keeps 륙. Inside some South Korean compounds the spelling keeps 륙, as in 오륙도 and 사륙판.

Why does 륙 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
