hangul syllable ryung

Hangul Syllable Ryung

륭 is a Korean Hangul syllable, not a standalone word or emoji. Its sound is “ryung,” but its meaning comes from the word around it: 훌륭하다 means “excellent.” To type it, compose ㄹ + ㅠ + ㅇ with a Korean input method.

What 륭 means

Read it inside a Korean word. 훌륭하다 means “great, excellent, outstanding”; that meaning belongs to the full word, not to the isolated syllable.

It is one assembled block in Hangul’s system for writing Korean, not a separately invented sign. The first record of Hunminjeongeum is dated 1443, and its explanatory book appeared in 1446 to document initials, medials, and finals combining into syllables.

Why does 륭 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
