What 산 means

By itself, 산 means “mountain” in Korean. It appears in 등산 (“hiking”) and 산맥 (“mountain range”); read each complete word rather than translating every 산 as a separate noun.

Hangul groups letters into syllable blocks to write Korean speech. Its creation is dated to 1443; the Hunminjeongeum, a text explaining the script, to 1446. A 1527 Korean vocabulary book, Hunmong Jahoe, records 산 as “mountain.”
