Hangul syllable sass

샀 marks the past, usually for buying. With different objects, 사다 can mean hire, value, or incur resentment. Alone, it feels unfinished; an ending completes it.

Text symbol

What 샀 means

It is the contracted past form of 사다, usually “to buy.”

샀어 is casual; 샀어요 is polite. Korean omits subjects or objects when context is clear.

Hangul was created in 1443 for easier Korean literacy; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum book explained the script. Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. King Sejong promoted it through practical, religious, educational, and literary books; it became Korea’s national writing system in 1894.
