What 셎 means
Read it within the Korean word or sentence. 셎 is a single Hangul syllable block; its place in that text tells you what it contributes.
Where did the script behind 셎 come from?
Hangul was designed to write Korean more directly. Its earliest surviving announcement is dated 1443; the 1446 text Hunminjeongeum explained the new writing system. Hangul represented Korean more directly than Chinese characters and widened access beyond the elite trained in them. Buddhist texts, popular novels, and official documents helped move it from an alternative writing tool into public writing.
The proposed influence of Phags-pa, a square phonetic script for languages under Mongol rule, remains debated. Some Korean scholars argue that it influenced parts of Hunminjeongeum, especially its vowel design. This is a proposed link between script traditions, not evidence that 셎 itself was copied from Phags-pa.
