What 셈 means
It covers counting, settlement, and practical assessment. It comes from 세다 (“to count”): count items, settle money, check amounts, weigh profit, or judge circumstances. Its earliest attested ancestor is 혬 in the 1459 Worin seokbo, an early Buddhist biography collection.
-은/는 셈이다 means “that counts as…”; -는 셈 치다 means “treat it as if…”. The counting noun thus also marks equivalence and assumption in present Korean.
Neutral Korean vocabulary; the surrounding phrase supplies the tone.
A lone 셈 is not enough to choose one English translation.
