What 셋 means
It means “three” as a standalone Korean numeral.
Its job is practical counting: use it for a plain count, 셋이요 (“three”), or 셋이서 (“the three of us”).
Middle Korean sources from the fifteenth-century record 세ㅎ/seyh. Modern 셋 has ㅅ where that form had ㅎ; the number stayed three. A 2008 review left its deeper etymology unsettled.
Use 셋 alone; 세 before counters
Use 셋 alone; 세 precedes counters; 삼 is a separate system. 삼 is Sino-Korean “three,” used for dates, prices, and phone digits. Before some ㄷ- or ㅈ-initial counters, 세 may be pronounced 석.
Neutral everyday Korean: it gives a quantity, not a mood.
Before a counter, use 세, not 셋.
