Hangul syllable Ssyoj

쑞 is a Hangul syllable block, and its meaning depends on the Korean word around it. The Unicode label “ssyoj” names its three jamo (Korean letters), ᄊ ᅭ ᆽ. A Korean 2-set keyboard forms it with ShiftT, Y, W; a font without the glyph may show a box.

What 쑞 means

It is one syllable written as a block of Hangul letters.

Unicode’s label “ssyoj” describes the three jamo that compose the block: ᄊ, the initial consonant; ᅭ, the vowel; and ᆽ, the final consonant. Their more familiar letter forms are ㅆ, ㅛ, and ㅈ. The label identifies how the block is built; it does not translate a word.

Hangul was devised in 1443 and introduced with a guide to its principles in 1446. It aimed to make Korean writing more accessible than using Chinese characters directly or through Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal, three methods that adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. Hangul later appeared in religious, everyday, household, and official writing. It became Korea’s official national writing system in 1894. In contemporary usage, South Korea favors the name Hangeul, while North Korea uses Choseongul.

How do I type 쑞?

Use a Korean 2-set keyboard and press ShiftT, Y, W.

Select Korean 2-set, also called Dubeolsik. On its standard QWERTY layout, ShiftT, then Y and W enters ㅆ ㅛ ㅈ; the Korean input method composes those jamo into 쑞. Other layouts may map the letters to different keys.

Unicode also defines a canonically equivalent decomposed sequence made from those three jamo. Text normalization can change between the block and that sequence while preserving the same Hangul syllable.

Why does 쑞 look different or disappear?

The character stays the same; fonts draw it in their own style.

Supported fonts can vary the components’ shape, size, and placement. If a font or app lacks this glyph, it may show a box, question mark, blank space, or fallback character. Those are display problems, not alternate Hangul syllables.

A different outline does not by itself mean the text changed. Unicode’s decomposed jamo sequence is another representation of the same syllable, so compare the underlying text rather than appearance alone.

Why is 쑞 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
