Hangul syllable sweod

숻 is a Hangul syllable block, but by itself it is not a Korean word with a fixed meaning. Inside a word, it groups ㅅ, ㅝ, and final ㄷ; a Korean input method builds the block from those parts. The final ㄷ can shift to ㅈ before an attached ending that starts with ㅣ.

What 숻 means

It is a Hangul syllable block, not a word by itself. It joins the opening consonant ㅅ, vowel ㅝ, and closing consonant ㄷ; the surrounding Korean word supplies the meaning.

Hangul's creation is dated to 1443 under King Sejong. The 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained the script's purpose and design: a Korean writing system easier to learn than the Chinese characters and adaptations then used for Korean. A 2019 study explores whether Hangul's square syllable blocks drew on 'Phags-pa, a square script used for Mongolian and other languages under the Yuan dynasty. That proposed influence concerns Hangul's design, not the borrowing of 숻 itself.

How did Hangul's role change?

Its uses grew beyond official writing in Chinese characters. During the Joseon-era, Hangul appeared in Buddhist books, later Confucian texts, practical guides, and personal letters. People across social ranks used it, including royalty, enslaved people, and noblewomen writing petitions.

Chinese characters still dominated official records until Hangul became the official national writing system in 1894. Japanese rule ended that status in 1910; Korean scholars continued to teach, study, and write in Hangul.

How do I type 숻?

Enter its Hangul parts in order. With a Korean input method, enter ㅅ, then ㅝ, then ㄷ; it composes them into 숻. Unicode can also store the joining Jamo—Hangul letters used to build syllables—separately as ᄉ ᅯ ᆮ. A Hangul-capable font and text shaper should display those parts as one block; separate parts or a missing-glyph box point to a display-support problem.

How is 숻 pronounced?

Without a surrounding word, it has no fixed spoken-word reading. In a Korean word, ㅅ is close to the s in “sun,” and ㅝ is roughly “wuh.” At a word end or before a consonant, ㄷ is usually an unreleased t; before an attached ending beginning with ㅣ, it can shift to a j-like ㅈ.
